Save or Splurge Mascaras

Hey guys!
Today we are talking about my absolute favorite beauty product…. Mascara!
If I had to choose just one makeup product to use every day, it would 100% be mascara.
Luckily for me I already have pretty long eye-lashes, but they are blonde so without
mascara, you can’t see them. I won’t complain though because I am super grateful for their length.

Mascara can be a total hit or miss though, I’ve found that my eyelashes look totally different based on the mascara I choose to use. Which seems kind of weird, because the actual gunk inside kind of all looks the same? It’s a mystery I guess.

Believe it or not, my absolute ride-or-die mascara is $7 and can be purchased at any drug store.

Yep, the Maybelline Volum’ Express- Colossal Cat Eyes {un-intentional, but fitting} … cheap and amazing!

However, I don’t ever just use 1 mascara…. which is so weird, but I think all girls do it… right? You gotta use multiple to get the full effect. Also, pro tip: wait at least 30 seconds before applying the second coat and brush the mascara from the top side as well. I hate when I see people only coating one side of their lashes, they are missing out on so much extra volume doing it that way.

Okay so here are the other favorites that I use as my second and third coatings.. these are the ones I’m willing to switch between depending on what I have on hand. The Maybelline one is the only one that is a non-negotiable for me though.

The Dior Show Iconic Overcurl.. worth the splurge! This is my favorite “luxury” mascara. I love this one as my second coat because its a bit thicker of a formula with a slightly curved brush that gives the perfect amount of curl.

Bobbi Brown: This is one I got for free, but actually ended up really liking. It fits the profile of the whole Bobbi line, nothing too over the top, perfect for day-time wear. They call it their “smokey eye” but compared to other brands, I wouldn’t say this is that bold.

Lancome: Purchased this one during Nordstrom’s Mascara Madness. Its super jet black, which is perfect for when I’m doing a smoky eye. I really like this one, but probably wouldn’t purchase it at full price. Save this for when Nordstrom is doing their buy 2 get 1 free special.

Cover Girl LashBlast: Another drug-store find! This brush is perfect for when my lashes are starting to get clumpy and I need a super fine tooth comb to just run through them and separate. I use this on days where I’ve over-applied and need to tone them down a bit. The best part is that it’s usually on the clearance racks at target… I think I paid like $5 max for it.

Okay now on to the “Nastaran Approved” Mascaras {my sister-in-law, the Makeup Artist} Follow her on instagram to get your daily make-up fix– click here: @makeup_byNastaran

Tarte Lights Camera Lashes: this is considered to be a 4 in 1 product- it lengthens, curls, volumizes, and conditions. Idk if I believe the “conditioning” part, but 3 out of 4 aint bad. Best part, it’s completely Cruelty Free!! This is on my list of to-buy products.

Maybelline Colossal Big Shot: This is their new one…and honestly I want it just because of how pretty the packaging is. Unlike the Volume Express, this one has “wavy” bristles. This one has great reviews on Ulta and is also super cheap so I don’t see how you can go wrong with it.

Mac Extended Play Lash: This one is perfect for your bottom lashes! It doesn’t flake off like some do. So do yourself a favor and avoid the dreaded mascara flakes- purchase this and save it just for those bottom lashes.

Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume
: Apparently this one puts my “use multiple mascaras” rule to shame. This is a one and done type product. However, the product comes out quite thick so be careful otherwise you’ll end up with crazy spider lashes.

Lastly, I’m dieing to get my hands on the Mac InstaCurl Lash Mascara… I’ve been seeing it everywhere. Has anyone tried it?

What is your ride-or-die makeup product?  Tell me below… I’m always looking for product recommendations! 🙂

xoxo, Abby

  1. I love mascara too!! I’ve tried several over the years as well. I remember trying Diorshow a few years back after hearing from several people it was the best, but I wasn’t really any more impressed with it than I had been others I’d used, like Clinique and Estee Lauder. Since getting more into natural beauty and looking for cruelty-free options in recent years, I started using and truly have LOVED Tarte’s Lights Camera Lashes! Definitely recommend it. That one is tied for my current favorite, along with the Fruit Pigmented Black Tea Mascara from a natural brand called 100% Pure! Let me know what you think if you decide to check them out! 🙂

    • Traci-
Thank you so much for the recommendation- I appreciate it! I will definitely look into 100% Pure, I really need to be more diligent about seeking out brands with all natural ingredients as well as being cruelty-free! To be honest, thats what makes me come back to Tarte time and time again- I love that they have such a big stance against animal testing.

  2. Great post on mascaras! I currently own 3 (all from the same brand, lol) and it’s so true what you mentioned, amazing how lashes change depending on the mascara you use. I haven’t tried the Big Colossal Shot from Maybelline but I think I’ll go get it after reading this 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
