6 Bachelor Secrets — As Told By Former Contestants

Ever wonder what it’s like being a contestant on ABC’s hit television show ‘The Bachelor/ette’?

Last Monday, my mom and I were watching together just as we always do, and I mentioned to her that the ITM’s (In the moment) interviews are not always done IN THE MOMENT.

Production keeps notes of what each contestant wears on each date, that way they can go back and fill in the story-line  for viewers. This can be up to weeks or MONTHS after the filming of that scene, so if you keep a close eye you can find some discrepencies in the appearance of the bachelor/ette being interviewed.

My mom was intrigued as to how I figured that out, so I thought I’d share some of the little bachelor secrets I’ve discovered over the years:

1. The ITM’s Are Not Really In The Moment

Yep, that’s right– months. Bachelor hottie Sean Lowe admitted that after already proposing to Catherine, production will call him back in to do interviews in which he would have to talk about his feelings towards the other lady-testants.

I’d say things like, “I’m having a blast with Des tonight, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.” It wasn’t disingenuous, because I expressed what my true feelings were at the time. Mainly, it was boring. — Sean Lowe

After reading about this, I’ve picked up on it several times where the outfits or hair color of the contestant doesn’t exactly match up to how they looked on the show. Very tricky ABC.

2. Contestants Undergo a Psychiatric Evaluation & STD Test
Shockingly enough, the contestants actually go through a ton of screenings and tests to be sure they are medically and mentally equipped to be a potential match for their suitor. So either some of these contestants are GREAT liars…. or they quickly become crazy after being cast for the show.

I wanna know who evaluated these girls …

3. Chris Harrison is quite the Beauty Guru apparently…
As stated in an interview with former Bachelorette- Jillian Harris…

Did you learn any beauty tricks from the producers?
“Well, Chris Harrison, who became a good friend, taught me this one: Midol with caffeine. I’d take one on days that I was tired and bloated. It’s a diuretic. If my face was puffy, it would debloat me, and it has a painkiller so it made my feet feel better in heels. Now, before I go out at night, I’ll take one an hour before. It’s really no different from taking Advil.” — Jillian Harris

Interesting… I’ve never heard this one. But what’s more interesting is how Chris Harrison knows about it?

4. You get goodie bags!

As stated in an interview with Catherine Lowe…

Did they provide any clothes?

“You had to bring your own, but every season, when you move into the mansion, each bed has a gift bag on top of it. It was a piece of luggage with a ton of clothing, jewelry, and beauty [products]. There were bikinis, jewelry, and jeans. You could trade if they didn’t give you the right sizes. It was nice stuff!”– Catherine Lowe

5. No Eating Allowed on Camera… But Drinking is Fine!

Ever wonder why the couples never seem to take a single bite of their perfectly arranged $100 steak during the one-on-one dates? It’s not because the girls are trying to keep from bloating in their tight dresses- production literally won’t allow it because it doesn’t make for good TV (rightfully so).
Don’t worry- they send food up to their room while they are getting ready for the date. The plates of food in front of them are strictly to ‘set the scene’.

Drinking the other hand— fully encouraged. The bars are fully stocked with anything the girls could want. Very rarely will you see a walking around without a glass in hand… how else could production get them to spill all of their dirty secrets to us right?!

6. No Doesn’t Necessarily Mean No

Remember Sweet Emily Maynard? Staying true to the classy image they set out for her (not that she doesn’t deserve it– I love her) production definitely skewed what America saw on her season to keep the good girl image in full effect.

When it came time for the Fantasy Suite Invitation, America watched respectfully as Emily denied the men the opportunity to spend the night with her, because she didn’t want to portray the wrong image to her daughter.

Well….according to Sean Lowe, that’s not entirely true. Production filmed Emily saying goodnight to Sean- only to then go right back in the door as soon as the film crew got the footage they needed. Sure sure- Sean said all they did was stay up all night talking…. but we know Emily couldn’t resist that grin.

“She told me, she said, ‘Listen, I’m only gonna do this with you. We’re gonna look like we’re gonna wrap up the date, but then we’re gonna go to the Fantasy Suite and we can just hang out,’” Lowe revealed.

“And so that’s exactly what we did, and I think I walked her back to her place at like four in the morning. We spent like four hours, no cameras, and so I’m thinking if she’s only doing it with me she must want to choose me! Of course it was that same week she sent me home,” he laughed. “And I found out she did it with the other guys.” — Sean Lowe

Peel your eyes for some of these little details as you watch next Monday’s episode and comment below if you notice anything you hadn’t before! Let’s all hope Olivia goes home too.
